The Lumencor Light Engine from BioVision Technologies
The SOLA Light Engine:® Replacement for the Arc Lamp
The Lumencor® SOLA light engine® outperforms xenon and metal-halide sources by purely power considerations alone. Moreover it offers robustness, stability and longevity.
It comes with a liquid light guide and an adapter that connects the light engine to the liquid light guide. Couplers are available for connecting the liquid light guide to microscopes from all major microscope manufacturers.

The Lumencor® SPECTRA light engine® is uniquely suited to provide for the needs of a broad array of bioanalytical instruments. It generates high‐power, multi‐color, narrow‐band, stable, durable and cost‐effective light across the UV–Vis–NIR spectrum. The Lumencor light engine enhances overall instrument performance and reduces cost. Configurations with up to seven color outputs are available. Color selection and bandwidth are tailored upon request.
This is a solid state illumination subsystem. It incorporates the sources and optics in a compact, easy‐to‐use box. It provides all the functions of excitation and neutral density filters, filter wheel, optical elements, field diaphragm, shutter and controller.
Leveraging developments in materials science, optics and solid state physics, the light engine is well suited for a broad array of applications, particularly live and fixed cell imaging. Now all common fluorescent dyes, proteins and conjugates can be illuminated with a lighting subsystem that is powerful enough to maximize fluorescent response and offers the stability and robustness necessary for quantitation.
The SPECTRA light engine offers:
- Up to seven colors in a fully integrated, compact controller;
- Fast switching time (5 kHz);
- Easy implementation with commercial microscopes;
- Reliability (10,000 hour lifetime).
SPECTRA X Light Engine
The SPECTRA X offers individual users and core facilities the spectral breadth of an arc lamp and the flexibility of a filter wheel in Lumencor’s most powerful light engine design.
No moving parts reside in this SPECTRA model. It provides cool, stable, robust, spectrally pure, powerful outputs.
The SPECTRA X allows the user to exchange single band pass filters within the light engine, and field‐replaceable filters allow Lumencor to offer as many as 21 different bandpasses for use within the visible spectrum. This allows the user to make choices about bandpass during use.
Each output in the optical train of the light engine remains aligned through filter exchanges, allowing the user to focus on science without worrying about realigning and maintaining a light source.
Additional filter paddles and filters may be purchased at any time to increase the specific bandpasses for sources within the light engine.

SPECTRA Light Engine
The SPECTRA is a powerful, multiband, solid state replacement for the arc lamp. It is optimized for the most common fluorophores used in bioanalysis today, covering the visible spectrum with up to seven outputs, in color bands suitable for both live and fixed cell analysis. Primary bands and alternatives are available to best match the dichroic and emission filter of your choosing. All outputs are optimized with the same performance in terms of stable, durable, powerful, switchable light.
Remote Control Accessory
The Remote Control Accessory provides control of the SPECTRA light engine directly as well as via software.
It allows the user to name the individual excitation bands, toggle between them, set power levels for individual bands as well as to set a user-definable default setting for commonly used wavelengths and power levels.
Its four‐line display offers real-time readout of light engine settings and states. The user can customize the interface of the Remote Control Accessory itself, providing ease of light use to individual users and core facilities.
The Accessory can be used without a dedicated computer or third‐party software.
It can be used in conjunction with the Camera Interface Accessory (CIA).
Camera Interface Accessory
Lumencor’s SPECTRA light engines already reduce photo-toxic events that occur while imaging samples due to its spectrally pure outputs. The use of solid state technology eliminates stray ultraviolet and infrared light that can damage cells.
The Camera Interface Accessory improves the precision of the SPECTRA’s timing and control by allowing the SPECTRA to run as master or slave in an imaging system. This direct control ensures the SPECTRA is perfectly synchronized with the camera for acquisition. Thus, biological samples are exposed to the minimum amount of light needed for image capture.
In addition to gating the light engine and camera, the Accessory can also be logically linked to other devices such as filter wheels and X-Y-Z stages to reduce overhead and delays in image acquisition on more complex systems.
